Nina Bogerd would describe herself as a “typical highly educated expat woman” who lives in The Netherlands, but of all the things she is, ‘typical’ is not one of them. Bogerd went through a process of remaking her life after realizing that the dream she has pursued for many years wasn’t making her happy anymore, and that is a hard-to-find level of self-awareness.
“It was a wake-up call, how does one respond to it, or whether one ignores it? How do you leave the dream that was built over almost two decades, but no longer serves to bring happiness? And how does one then not only defines but also builds-up a new professional career and in fact also a new life?”
The big questions that Nina was asking herself was the first step into transforming her way of life, and that process started to take shape in January 2019. She found UDiverse, after searching for a career coach which specialized in working with highly educated expats, then she chose our program because she felt she can trust us to make the best of this big challenge she was facing.
We had one orientation meeting to outline the best way of going through the process of attending her inner call, and also to find again joy in the things she does. In that meeting, she gained the confidence to take a leap of faith to find her passion. The possibility of finding a fulfilling job that enables her to be present on the growing-up of her children was the key motivation to commit to the change.
The Greater Unknown
Nina needed a tailored program to address the specifics of her situation. We went through many crucial steps such as defining the life she wanted, as well as the steps she has to take to get it- which included setting a belief system. This helped her built up the self-confidence and a resolutive attitude to face any challenge that shows up during the process and even the awareness, of knowing the boundaries of what can be done to materialize her dreams.
In that process, she found an unspoken truth inside of her: she was passionate about helping foreign pregnant women and their partners through the birthing process. She found that thread and she kept pulling it until it was clear enough: “… it became obvious that I am very passionate about supporting foreign pregnant women and their partners educationally, physically and emotionally prior to, during and after the process of birthing in The Netherlands”.
The answer she was searching was doula and childbirth educator with a specific interest to support foreigners living in The Netherlands.
“The path for my future career was set”.
It took less than a year for Nina to build a sustainable business idea around the career insight that we found through our coaching sessions. By November 2019, she had her own company where she focuses on providing educational, physical and emotional support, as a doula and childbirth educator for foreign pregnant women and their partners, in The Netherlands.
“My quest is to help them, finding their way and to educationally, physically and emotionally support them prior, during and beyond the birthing process they have chosen”.
Nina’s journey is just starting, but looking back makes her realize that all the steps she took were worth it. Now she’s able to manage her own business, specializing in her field and have the time and energy to be with her husband and children. Achieving work-life balance can be seen as a very exceptional thing, but Nina has a simple answer to get it right: “I came to believe that because I am doing again what I am passionate about, life is not anymore about going to the job, life became a fulfilling job”.
This process doesn’t end with our coaching sessions. Nina has a lot to do in the present, but now she has ways and skills to face any challenge that may appear in her way. For her, now it’s all about confidence and execution- the two things she has already put into practice for her plans in 2020: with 3 booked clients and plenty of educational steps secured.
“It takes immense courage to push yourself to over the edge and to jump into the unknown, but I would not want to have it any other way. And despite this, there is still this nagging feeling about how I am not always succeeding to do everything how I want it to be, but now, I trust myself and the process. I simply feel I am on the right path. So if you still think if you should jump, do not think, jump!!”
