Cultural diversity is now becoming a vital issue for many companies. Organizations are now encouraged to address the root cause of cultural diversification. This diversification brings a lot of potential while at the same time; it increases the chances of interpersonal conflicts. Women are notably more concerned with workplace diversity than men.
The plan is normally to return to work and continue from where they stopped. However, for anyone who has done this before, she will be aware of the impacts of taking a lot of time out of work. It actually comes with a lot of pressure, from multitasking to all the support you have to provide to your child.
As per the research conducted by ‘American Sociology Association’, it is evident that the minorities still go through discrimination even though there are a lot of companies that have policies in place to help in preventing this. Women in various employment stages can be affected by diversity, and thus may range from being hired, holding specific positions, effective interactions, promotions to team communication.
As per Dr. Stefanie Johnson’s research, it was found out that women who applied for jobs which were thought to be masculine were denied the chance of getting that job. In addition to that, attractive men were not denied the chance of getting any job they applied for.
Diversity is an excellent approach to enhance the competitiveness of a company. The principle of diverse work force is preferably applied throughout the hierarchy. However, it is important for women who enter a profession with the aim of ascending the corporate ladder to know that there is no diversity on boards as well as the executive team.
The often cause of conflict is the language barrier and customs. And women who work in a culturally diverse workplace experience alit of misunderstanding as well as miss communication with their colleagues who are from various cultural backgrounds. For instance, supervisory styles are also considered a cultural matter. Tension may arise in situations where a white man supervises a Hispanic man; this is because the two were brought in different cultural environments. And the consequences of this diversity can be very drastic. Lack of knowledge and understanding may lead to setbacks in project development.
Diversity can also affect women positively; a woman can lead the diversity program of the office so as to increase awareness and also make people understand female cultures more. By having a successful diversity program in place, everybody will have a chance to learn from their other colleagues. Women will also find an opportunity to learn from their colleagues, for instance, how to negotiate their salary better.
Women in a workplace that is diverse friendly may also get a better appreciation of their skills as well as talents.
It is important to note that both men and women go to work and all of them are equal at work. Therefore, people should avoid discriminating women at all cost.
